#AAJA Students: Lessons learned from reading @SeattleTimes summer intern apps
The Seattle Times newsroom internship committee just vetted more than 400 applications for our summer internship. We’re still going through the selection process, but here are a few lessons we learned that we hope will help future AAJA students applying for internships at any newsroom.
DO double check your cover letter and resume are going to the right place. Saw this: “I’m seeking an internship at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution” in a cover letter for a Seattle Times internship.
DON’T swear in your cover letter. And if you’re including your Twitter handle in your resume, make sure your tweets are family friendly.
DO say that you’re an AAJA (or NAHJ, NABJ, NAJA) student member in your resume. Diversity matters.
DO use your cover letter as a place to stand out. This is a place for prospective employers to see your raw and unedited writing. A boring cover letter suggests you don’t have imagination. And if your cover letter begins with how you were born with a pen and pad in your hand and how you always wanted to write … guess what? You sound just like 90 percent of the other applicants. Find a compelling and unique way to tell us why you should be considered.
DON’T mention you interned at the New York Times and then fail to include any clips from that internship. We end up assuming that you didn’t get anything published during your internship.
DO send a thank-you note after an interview, whether it’s by phone or in person.
If you don’t have a PDF scanner, here is a handy little website called JoliPrint that will convert your Web stories to PDF format.
