Attorneys gone wild

If anyone has ever received a letter like this from a Microsoft attorney, e-mail me ASAP at schan@seattletimes.com.

Oh look, it is the response we dream of composing to every single annoying email ever.

In 1974, a Cleveland resident penned a litigation-threatening letter to the owner of the Browns:

#AAJA JOB ALERT: Yakima Herald looking for two reporters, one biliterate in Spanish #nahj

Reporter Openings

The Yakima Herald-Republic seeks two reporters who live to write for Page 1 and break news online, while not neglecting the bread-and-butter news coverage a community newspaper requires.

The beats assigned to each reporter will be determined by the top candidates’ skills and abilities. Our most urgent needs are coverage of health, social issues — including immigration and the growing Latino population in the Yakima Valley — natural resources/environment and politics.

Read this. @SeattleTimes story on how a white crossing guard was a barrier-breaking jazz rebel → seattletimes.nwsource.com

A really cool story about the first white man to join the black musicians union in Seattle in the 1940s that illuminates race and jazz history.

#AAJA JOB ALERT: St. Pete Times looking for a preps sports reporter

The St. Petersburg Times, Florida’s largest newspaper, is looking for a high-energy reporter to cover high school sports in one of our key competitive areas. The position is a mix of deadline and non-deadline reporting, with a heavy dose of writing/blogging for the Web. We’re looking for someone who has demonstrated the ability to tackle the deeper, more difficult story, go beyond the gamer and feature. Video shooting and editing skills are desirable, and a nose for news is an absolute must. Football and recruiting are our bread and butter, but we cover 15 or so seasonal sports, so be prepared to juggle multiple beats. Interested candidates should send a packet to:

Roy LeBlanc

Assistant Metro Editor

St. Petersburg Times

490 First Ave. S

St. Petersburg, FL 33701

For more information, contact Roy LeBlanc ( leblanc@sptimes.com ) or Regional Sports Editor Traci Johnson ( tjohnson@sptimes.com ).

#AAJA Students: Lessons learned from reading @SeattleTimes summer intern apps

The Seattle Times newsroom internship committee just vetted more than 400 applications for our summer internship. We’re still going through the selection process, but here are a few lessons we learned that we hope will help future AAJA students applying for internships at any newsroom.

DO double check your cover letter and resume are going to the right place. Saw this: “I’m seeking an internship at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution” in a cover letter for a Seattle Times internship.

DON’T swear in your cover letter. And if you’re including your Twitter handle in your resume, make sure your tweets are family friendly.

DO say that you’re an AAJA (or NAHJ, NABJ, NAJA) student member in your resume. Diversity matters.

DO use your cover letter as a place to stand out. This is a place for prospective employers to see your raw and unedited writing. A boring cover letter suggests you don’t have imagination. And if your cover letter begins with how you were born with a pen and pad in your hand and how you always wanted to write … guess what? You sound just like 90 percent of the other applicants. Find a compelling and unique way to tell us why you should be considered.

DON’T mention you interned at the New York Times and then fail to include any clips from that internship. We end up assuming that you didn’t get anything published during your internship.

DO send a thank-you note after an interview, whether it’s by phone or in person.

If you don’t have a PDF scanner, here is a handy little website called JoliPrint that will convert your Web stories to PDF format.

Looking for more coaching?

Get a mentor! AAJA matches print and online college students with professional mentors. Here is where you can sign up to get a mentor if you are an AAJA student member.

For more advice on applying for internships and jobs, my favorite resource is the Poynter Institute’s Ask the Recruiter column by veteran recruiter and longtime AAJA supporter Joe Grimm. If you have specific questions, Joe holds regular live chats anyone can drop in on. The replays are archived on Poynter.

Interested in interning at The Seattle Times? The deadline has passed for our 2011 summer internship but mark your calendar for Nov. 1, 2011 for our 2012 summer internship deadline!
